The big crunch of the ketchup-flavored chips is a bit jarring, but there's something comforting about the saltiness. It's just like having a salty little crustacean snack. If you're not much of a ketchup fan, these could be the only thing you need to enjoy a bag of chips. But if you're a fan, or if you just need a snack to enjoy on the subway, there's no question about it: these are the best patties around.
I went to Calgary's Calbee with the idea of ordering a bowl of their “Shrimp Chips” . But at $7.99 CAD for a small bowl, I couldn't resist. I also bought a bag of their delicious All-Purpose Fries , which I've had before, and they were delicious too. Regular fries are available, of course, but they're often too greasy and can be too salty. These fries were a good size, crispy and not too greasy, with a nicely spiced seasoning. They're the perfect pick-me-up snack. They're not as thin as other brands, but that means they don't go soggy so quickly and can be eaten without the fear of them becoming a mess.
The Japanese are also renowned for their affinity for seaweed. It's sold by the truckload, with the ingredients prominently labelled. Seaweed is also a key ingredient in Japanese cooking. It makes the saltiness of other ingredients more palatable. And the Japanese love it in katsu curry and tonkatsu ramen. Calbee's salty shrimp chips, I feel, perfectly exemplify the Japanese love of seafood and seaweed.
The punchy, sour and salty tastes of ketchup pair perfectly with the unctuous, crispy, salty goodness of potato chips. These little shrimp chips are a flavorful match, and a clever way to win over those non-shrimp lovers in your crowd. Make sure to get your hands on this Canadian snack as soon as you can. You'll soon be smitten.
