I liked the pace of the film. It was slow but it didn't feel like a comedy. It's not funny but it does move to an accordion-like rhythm as it unfolds. The characters have conflicts at their own fault and at other people's fault. They have their own hopes that are thwarted by fate as well as by external forces. It's a story that unfolds just like a film script should, very patiently. The film's pace is very slow and contemplative. Like a play, there are pauses of dialogue for revelation. The characters are better-developed than the plotline. The story does unfold. It's not a movie in a hurry to get to the resolution or the sequel. It's not like Bride and Prejudice which is laugh-out-loud funny. It's not as comedic as The Tiger and the Tiger where a tiger emerges from the jungle at the wedding of a British couple. This is not a comedy and it's not a romance. It's a story about outsiders finding strength in each other. It isn't a Western movie. It's a film about India and about the world with India as a backdrop.

The movie isn't for everyone. It's not like the classic novel from the late 1800's where a young man falls in love with a woman on a train and goes to India to marry her. You have to know it's a train in India in the 1800's and you have to know that India is a developing country in the 1800's. Not everyone is like my sister who had her high school graduation when the movie came out and was about to go to college. She knows about India and her friends in my family have read the book. Other people I know have friends who are very comfortable with India and its cultures. This movie is for them. Those who are not well-versed about India can probably appreciate the film without knowing the background.

The picture was also beautifully shot and directed. Since it was a full length feature film, I believe the acting was solid. The writers did an excellent job at creating the rich culture of India. From the difference in accents, languages, etc. The actors were able to project the feeling of the movie and the characters. I'm glad to see that Hollywood and Bollywood are growing closer and working together. I hope that this movie is released in the U.S. in order to increase awareness of India as a country and people. I think that I understand some of the beliefs and customs of the people. I think that my high school seniors really enjoyed this movie and hope to see it again.
